A recreational fisher has been fined $15,000 in the Gisborne District Court for illegally taking rock lobster. Fisheries officers found more than 100 undersized rock lobster in a boat belonging to Tame Waikari. He did not dispute taking the fish but maintained he had a legal right, and backed it up with a written permit. However he was found guilty of the charges. In sentencing the judge fined Waikari $15,000 and also ordered him to hand over his $5,000 boat. He said it is a watershed case and stressed that Waikari’s actions undermined the Quota Management System.
