Cooks Beach on the flood watch list, says Niwa

A park bench and a pine tree were both knocked off their perch at Cooks Beach when sands were eroded away by storm seas in September, 2013. Cooks Beach in the Coromandel will see more frequent flooding over the next century as sea levels rise, says an expert on coastal hazards. While the findings are based on data collected further north at Auckland, the principles would apply everywhere in New Zealand. “The Waikato region does have very vulnerable property. Cooks Beach is a great example, and the frequency of inundation there is going to rapidly increase as the sea level rises. This is going to be repeated around the country.”
