Ruru 1963

Ruru 1963

RURU, fishing vessel: While being towed, unmanned, by the trawler Lavenia from Greymouth to Westport on July 12, 1963, the Ruru developed a serious leak and sank about a mile and a-half offshore, off “Ten Mile”, north of Greymouth. The owner, Mr. C. C. Robertson, of Westport, was uncertain whether a seam gave way or a seacock accidently opened, but minutes before she sank the vessel took in water very rapidly. The Ruru, a 35-year-old vessel, sank in 30 feet of water and became a total loss.
