Kotare Wreck 1931
KOTARE, steamer: The vessel, which was not in commission, was anchored about 100 yards off shore in Patersons Inlet, Stewart Island, when she caught fire on July 19, 1931. The steamer burned to the water line and sank, becoming a total loss.
The Kotare, No. 117,667, was a wooden, screw steamer of 147 tons gross and 83 tons net register, built at Jervis Bay, N.S.W., in 1904, by Moore and Wentmore, and her dimensions were : length 105.3 ft., beam 24.8 ft., depth 6.6 ft. Her engines were of 20 h.p. Formerly named Shirley Hasell, her name was changed to Kotare in March, 1906. She was owned by the Southern Steam Ship Company Ltd.
