The citation for the prestigious award notes the enormous contribution Dave has made to all things marine, including the New Zealand Boat Show.
Dave first started diving in 1961 in Australia, then turned his passion into a job diving commercially throughout Asia, the Middle East and the South Pacific.
The citation says Dave “found a sport he loved and turned it into a career that took him all over the world. He was instrumental in helping establish then manage one of our best known and most loved tourist attractions (Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World) and created and successfully ran one of New Zealand’s longest running marine magazines.”
In 1990 Dave founded Dive New Zealand Magazine, a source of information, inspiration and education for divers throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific.
In accepting the Award Dave said “its a huge honour to be recognised by the boating industry. I’m absolutely amazed to be on the same board as our legendary boat builders and designers.”
Dave has a passion for underwater photography. He enjoys sharing his knowledge through his Sea Tech underwater camera housing business.
Dave has received numerous awards, including:
• New Zealand Underwater Association: Leo Ducker Award in 2002 for outstanding services to diving.
• SSI Platinum Pro 5000 Card holder, awarded in 1996. Platinum Pros are defined as the world’s most elite water explorers, with card holders a “Who’s Who” of diving.
• Historical Diving Society Australia Pacific (2015) appreciation award to Dave and wife, Petal, for Dive New Zealand and Dive Pacific Magazines
• Outstanding Contribution to the Diving Industry Award from New Zealand Underwater Association (2011)
Dave has played a key part in helping promote the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show since 1993. He was one of the earliest Boat of the Show Awards’ judges, a role he reprised again this year.
“Dave has spent a lifetime involved in and promoting diving and the underwater world and is clearly a very worthy inductee into the NEW ZEALAND BOAT SHOW HALL OF FAME.”
