A Whakatane charter boat operator who discovered a large amount of dead fish floating off the coast says he believes they were deliberately dumped. Mick Goodwin says hundreds of dead snapper were scattered over an area about 400-metres long. The Ministry of Fisheries says the fish may have been either accidentally spilled from a catch or may have been deliberately dumped. Mr Goodwin says he is in no doubt what happened. He says he believes the fish were dumped from a fishing vessel to allow more room for a more profitable species of fish.
