300 tonnes of oil removed from Prestige

Date: 1/8/2004

The first 300 tonnes of tar-like oil have been extracted from the

Prestige

which is resting four kilometres beneath the ocean surface, off Spain’s northwest Atlantic coast. The project is considered one of the most difficult cleanup operations ever attempted. The

Prestige

split apart in a storm on 19 November 2002, disgorging most of its 77,000 tonnes of toxic fuel oil.
