Aussies kick whaler out

Date: 1/2/2002

A Japanese whaling ship that entered Australian waters in the Antarctic was ordered out by an Australian research vessel. A Government spokesman said the Aurora Australis came across the whaler early on New Year’s Day about 70km inside the economic exclusion zone and ordered it to leave Australian territorial waters via short wave radio, and sent it scurrying back to its factory ship. The ship was with a fleet of 5 Japanese vessels planning to catch 400 Minke whales in the Antarctic Ocean for research purposes.

The environmental group Greenpeace congratulated the Australian Government for its stand.
