Success breeds success

Date: 1/2/2002

Tairua Dive & Fishinn have developed, with the assistance of Brian Schmidt of Tairua Dive Charters and Dianna and Pete Cussin of Slipper Island, a very successful dive package. Their third Teen Camp is to be held over the 16-17-18 & 19 December 2002. The objective of the camp is for the students to achieve their PADI oepnwater creditation, plus experience outdoor adventures that only living on an island can provide.

The Camp is designed for an age group from 10 – 20 year olds. The 10-12 year olds are accepted after discussion with their parents. Students are not only taught to dive but many learn about themselves and about leadership and teamwork skills that they may never have experienced before. For the younger ones it can be the first time they have been away from their comfort zones, such as family, homes and close friends.

Students are well prepared before they step ashore on Slipper Island.

One to two months before the Camp students receive PADI instruction material, videos and books. This pre-learning period enables the students to become familiar with the course subjects and it is also a great way for the parents/caregivers to also become involved with the learning process. It is a great refresher experience for parents who are already divers!

A get-together social event is held before the Camp so that the students can meet each other – break the ice, and for parents to meet other parents and the Instructors and others involved with running the Camp. The first day of the Camp is spent in Tairua, where students are introduced to scuba diving in the safety of a local swimming pool. On Slipper Island they stay in the large Lodge which has its own ‘Camp Mother’ taking care of their meals etc. Students are assessed and split into two groups, dependent on ability. Their days start with a 7.30 am swim in beautiful Home Bay

Five instructors, male and female, look after approximately 15 students that attend the course.

Dave Early of Tairua Dive and Fishinn is a qualified PADI Dive Master and Brian Schmidt of Tairua Dive Charters is a qualified PADI Instructor.

The divers dive from Brian’s purpose designed eight metre Stabicraft, powered by twin 115hp Johnson outboards.

This dive boat is the perfect vessel to introduce students to the adventures of scuba diving and New Zealand’s great outdoors.

The total four day package including full instruction in a classroom environment, accommodation, food, diving and the use of diving gear for $530. This is excellent value.

Book early as past years have shown positions are snapped up early.
