Poor Knights Surveillance Receives Additional Boost

Date: 1/6/2000

The Department of Conservation (DoC) is using the latest electronic gadgetry to turn night into day at the Poor Knights Marine Reserve in its campaign to ensure people are not fishing in this internationally renowned protected marine area.

DoC has gained access to the very latest in night vision gear, including scopes and long distance audio and visual recording equipment, after receiving information that people were travelling to the reserve in the evening to catch fish when they thought no-one was watching.

Fishing in a marine reserve is an offence under the Marine Reserves Act 1971 and carries a penalty of up to three months imprisonment, a $50,000 fine or both.
