Date: 1/12/2003

Philippe Taillez, a founding member of Cousteau’s original ‘Three Musketeers’ team, died early in the morning of Thursday 26 September. Together with Cousteau and Dumas, he carried out some of the first experiments with scuba equipment and underwater filming techniques in 1943. He helped found the original Group de Recherche Sous-marine (Underwater Research Group) and went on to become President of the Group de Recherche en Archeologie Navale (Naval Archaeology Research Group). Taillez continued to dive actively to age 94 and was regarded as a national hero in his native France.
