Australians are still having trouble agreeing how to use the Great Barrier Reef. Rezoning proposals to better protect the 345,000 sq km World Heritage Area are being hotly debated by locals. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, aims to increase the area covered by sanctuaries from 5% to around 25%. John Day GBRMPA conservation director says, âThe reef isnât a magic pudding that goes on forever. We have to look at putting in some controls. This isnât about fishing, itâs about biodiversity, which depend on a healthy ecosystems and thatâs what weâre trying to ensure.â A draft zoning plan is due in mid 2003.
