Australia’s GBR a Magic Pudding?

Date: 1/12/2003

Australians are still having trouble agreeing how to use the Great Barrier Reef. Rezoning proposals to better protect the 345,000 sq km World Heritage Area are being hotly debated by locals. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, aims to increase the area covered by sanctuaries from 5% to around 25%. John Day GBRMPA conservation director says, ‘The reef isn’t a magic pudding that goes on forever. We have to look at putting in some controls. This isn’t about fishing, it’s about biodiversity, which depend on a healthy ecosystems and that’s what we’re trying to ensure.’ A draft zoning plan is due in mid 2003.
