Two divers drowned after apparently suffering a shallow water blackout while spearfishing. On Friday 1 February 18 year old New Plymouth student, Bernard Hudson, failed to surface while spearfishing near Saddleback.
Lance Baker, 31 years, failed to surface while diving Kapiti Island on 10 March.
Both divers had recently competed in the New Zealand National Spearfishing Championships. Bernard and Portena Snowden accomplished a 26 placing while Lace and Robin Thornton came sixth.
