Two men were recently caught red-handed surfcasting off the beach at the Cape Rodney to Okakari Point Marine Reserve. Abandoned bait bags, hooks and home-made sinkers had been found in the days before the men were apprehended. The men were arrested by Warkworth police who charged them with taking marine life. If found guilty they face up to three months in prison or a $10,000 fine under the Marine Reserves Act.
Other problems in the reserve relate to the breaking of kina by divers. Several offenders have been caught and dive gear confiscated from them. Warkworth police say they will not tolerate fishing in the reserve. Constable Mike Richards said, âIf people are going to go into that reserve to fish, theyâre going to be arrested.â
