Volkner Rocks now reserve

The marine reserve (off the Bay of Plenty coastline) circles Volkner rocks with a 1.6km boundary and covers 1444ha. The area is renowned for kingfish, and is spiritually significant to local iwi, and was used by Navy gunners for target practice up until the mid-1990s. It protects a spectacular volcanic marine habitat that is a breeding area for up to 60 species of fish and home to several rare species of crab.
