100+ sea lions/annum to be killed by squid fishery

Date: 1/2/2005

The Minister of Fisheries announced that 115 New Zealand sea lions can be killed by squid fishery trawl operations. This is almost double the amount set in past years and is the highest number ever set. The World Wildlife Fund warns that the number of deaths will not be monitored this year so there will be uncertainty about the number actually killed, . The New Zealand sea lion is a threatened species under New Zealand law with a current population of only 12,000. The New Zealand sea lion is unique to our country and breeds only around the Auckland Islands where squid is concentrated.
