Lakes and rivers closed to commercial fishers

Three rivers and four lakes, including most of the Whanganui River and Pencarrow lakes have been closed to all commercial fishers since mid January in an effort to boost dwindling eel numbers. A senior Analyst for the Ministry of Fisheries, Dave Allen, says the ban will allow mature eels to make their one and only migration to the Pacific for breeding which is vital if the decline of eels is to be slowed.
