96kg marlin speared

Date: 1/2/2005

Heading out to the Mokohinau Islands, 16 kilometres from Omaha, the fish was spotted tailing on the surface in 2-3m visibility and 17 degree water. Steve tried to spot it a couple of times by jumping in the water but the visibility was so terrible it took three goes to even see its tail. With this opportunity he aimed ahead of the tail, into the murk, and fired to secure a great holding shot. After a 40 minute fight the 96kg fish was despatched and boated. A rare feat in unseasonal conditions, Steve Hathaway (Snells Beach), a dedicated spearfisherman, was as deserving as any to have landed such a great fish by speargun.
