Coral reef damage rising

Date: 1/2/2005

Only about 30% of the world’s coral reefs are healthy, down from 41% two years ago, according to a study released the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network a month before the devastating Tsuanami. The study found as many as one-fifth of the world’s coral reefs have been destroyed. Another half are damaged but could be saved, it said. In a separate report released by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, scientists expressed concern about the deterioration of protected coral reefs in areas isolated from human activity on the Great Barrier Reef, concluding that there was evidence that a lot of corals had died recently as a result of coral bleaching.
