Divers Help Assess and Repair Andaman Sea Reefs

Date: 1/2/2005

Led by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, volunteer divers are mapping the extent of the damage expecting it to be to about 20% of the Andaman Sea reefs. The divers are also helping to remove debris and garbage washed on to the reef from shore and working to repair damaged reef areas. It is estimated to take at least another three months to complete the work. The divers are focusing on reef areas off Patong Beach and off the tourist islands of Phi Phi, Surin and Racha. Scuba divers from all over the globe are assisting in the effor. Local dive shops and clubs are also volunteering divers and boats at low rates.
