While spearfishing at Great Barrier on Monday 20 June Darren Sheilds heard on the radio that there was a dead whale at Horn Rock in the Hauraki Gulf so on the return trip, in glassey calm conditions, it did not take long to locate it. It appeared to have a large cut maybe from a propeller and its tail missing completely. It was about 4-5 metres in length and smelt as though it had been dead for a few days. What looked like a float in front of its mouth was, we think, its lungs or air bladder. There were no sharks feeding from it only large black molly hawks that were so full of whale they could not take off.
