10,000 baby snapper to be freed in Nelson Crop and Food Research fish scientists plan to release 10,000 baby snapper. Two batches of fingerlings between 4-8cm long are the first offspring raised by the scientists in the Port Nelson base. The fingerlings were raised to provide fish to support research but they raised far more fish than required so will be released into the Nelson Haven in early spring.

Imprisonment for paua offence Wyn Yin Chow of Lower Hutt was sentenced to eight months imprisonment. He was apprehended buying 1003 individual shucked ordinary paua for the sum of $2,250 from two Johnsonville men. The paua, which were in 11 supermarket bags, weighed 117.9 kgs and had an estimated value of $10,600.
