Aussie divers, conservationists claim grey nurse sharks sanctuaries not working

Date: 1/12/2005

The sanctuaries created to help save the threatened species are not working. Divers claim that it has become a common sight to see grey nurse sharks with fishing hooks hanging from their mouths. If left unattended, the hooks would cause infection and can kill the shark. To protect these creatures the Nature Conservationists Council wish sanctuaries to be created in which all fishing would be banned. These sharks breed extremely slowly they are therefore still recovering from the slaughter by spearfishermen in the 1960s and 1970s.
