Sunken treasure looters posing as scuba divers in Mersing, Malaysia Looters are scouring the waters of Mersing looking for sunken treasure. A professor from the University Kebangsaan, Malaysia, said the looters had carried away many artefacts from shipwrecks. It is said that a shipload of these artefacts could fetch as much as US$6.5 million.  The looters use sophisticated tools to help them locate the wrecks.  Although it is not wrong to go looking for old wrecks it becomes illegal when artefacts are found and smuggled away from the host country.  According to the Professor this area is rich with ‘lost treasure’ dating back to 500BC.
