Questions Over Whale

The Department of Conservation staff is making investigations into how a young female sperm whale was caught in commercial fishing gear, and who took its teeth, after it was found washed up dead at Port Waikato south of Auckland. The whale had heavy long-line gear wrapped around its tail and most of its bottom teeth were missing.

Nelson Fisherman Fined $15,000 for dredging scallops in a marine reserve in the Marlborough Sounds. Tony Phillipson and his company Alfred Fishing Ltd both pleaded guilty in Nelson District Court to taking marine life from Long Island-Kokomohua Marine Reserve for commercial purposes.
