Big fines for ignoring cockle limits

In the Manukau District Court two women who blatantly ignored the legal limits for collecting cockles were convicted and each fined $1800 plus court costs of $130. Both women also had their four-wheel-drive vehicles confiscated and forfeited to the Crown. The women, along with three children, were collecting cockles at Cockle Beach when Fishery Officers caught them with the astonishing total of 2348 cockles.
