Divers have found the wreck of the Scottish-built cargo vessel SS Alert that sank 113 years ago of Cape Schanck on Victoriaâs Mornington Peninsula. The SS Alert was returning from East Gippsland when it was swamped, claiming 15 lives. After two years, and scores of trips to sea, Melbourne diver Mark Ryan and his team of amateur shipwreck adventurers finally found the ship in 80 metres of very dark water. The divers say that the ship is in remarkably good shape and the whole ship is intact. After seeing the bow of the ship by torchlight the divers knew that it was definitely the SS Alert. The SS Alert is an iron steamship originally designed for the lochs and rivers of Scotland.
