Extra $2.9m to hunt the HMAS Sydney

Date: 2/10/2007

The Australian Veterans Affairs Minister, Bruce Bilson has committed a further AUST $2.9m to the finding of the HMAS Sydney. This makes a total of AUD $4.2m put aside by the federal Government to launch a proper search, British shipwreck hunter David Mearns is expected to lead the expedition off Carnarvon, 1100km north of Perth, in early November. Mr Mearns believes he has an 80-90% chance of finding both the HMAS Sydney and the Kormoran, the German ship that ultimately sank the Sydney. The Sydney went down in November 1941 after a battle with the German raider. With the loss of all 645 sailors it remains Australia’s worst maritime disaster.
