Humpback whale differences

Date: 3/10/2007

Did you know that the underside of the tail fluke of every humpback whale is different? The unique markings on their tails enable humpback whales to be identified throughout their lives, and population numbers to be estimated. Over the past 15 years scientists have photographically identified over 1000 individual humpback whales in their various over-wintering grounds in the South Pacific.Japan, by contrast, is proposing to conduct its studies on humpbacks by killing 50 whales per year in their Antarctic feeding grounds south of New Zealand and Polynesia.
