Women drivers have endured jokes about map reading and reversing from men who pride themselves on their superior spatial awareness. However women divers are more aware of their surroundings according to a two-year study of scuba divers. âWomen have better orientation,â said Mandy Shackleton, a marine scientist, at Hull Universityâs marine sciences centre. Women are also found to be calmer, less aggressive and more safety conscious in the water than their âgung-ho, sensation-seekingâmale counterparts. âMore women are taking up the sport and now make up about 40% of all scuba divers,â she said
