Mutilated sharks found washed up on Townsville beach, Australia

Date: 1/8/2008

Four baby sharks washed up on Cape Pallarenda beach, are believed to be the victims of illegal finning. The carcasses of three sharks were gutted and fins removed, while only the head and upper torso of the fourth shark was left. Reports say that a set of shark fins could fetch more than $100 on the open market. These animals were missing their pectoral fins and the carcasses were left on the beach. Two of the sharks were scalloped hammerheads, the third a silky shark and the fourth an unknown species.
