A team of researchers led by Jon Copley of University of Southamptonâs School of Ocean and Earth Science will explore the Cayman Trough between Jamaica and the Cayman Islands which plunges to more than 5,000 metres and contains the worldâs deepest chain of undersea volcanoes. The researchers will use the UKâs newest research ship, RRS James Cook. From the research ship the remotely-operated vehicle Isis and a new British robot submarine Autosub6000 will explore the abyss to look for geological features and new species of marine life.
