Cayman Islands to sink US ship to create reef

Date: 2/12/2008

The Cayman Islands will scuttle the decommissioned US Navy ship USS Kittiwake, a 2,290-ton (2,077-metric ton) submarine rescue ship, to create an underwater attraction for scuba divers and snorkellers. Toxic materials will be removed by contractors from the vessel built in 1945, before the ship is sunk next year. The 251-foot (76-metre) Kittiwake should attract large schools of fish to deserted cabins and halls. In 1996, the Caribbean territory sank a 330-foot (100-metre) Russian destroyer in 60 feet (18 metres) of water off Cayman Brac. The wreck, now decorated with a thick coating of sponges and corals, has attracted an assortment of tourists and fish.
