Double amputee gets mermaid

Date: 27/03/2009

Most double amputees want prosthetic legs made, but Nadya Vessey from Auckland, New Zealand, wrote to the special effects company, Weta Workshop, Wellington, and asked if they could help her make a tail — so she could become a mermaid. Weta Workshop director Richard Taylor, more used to winning Oscars for visual effects from movies such as Lord of the Rings and King Kong, was delighted to make this happen. The suit, mostly of wetsuit fabric and plastic moulds, was covered in a digitally printed sock. Mermaid-like scales were painted by hand. Nadya tested the tail in a pool before frolicing in the harbour.
