200-Year-Old Dagger-Board Schooner

Date: 2/6/2009

A rare dagger-board schooner was discovered in deep water off the southern shore of Lake Ontario, New York. Divers located the schooner using deep-towed side scan sonar equipment. Sailing vessels of this type were in use on the Great Lakes for only a short period of time beginning in the early 1800s. The ship is the only dagger-board schooner known to have been found in the lakes.
