Campaigning against the consumption of shark fins, animal activists held a rally at Speakers Corner, Singaporeâs only venue for demonstrations. The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) carried a banner with the slogan âwhen sharks die, the oceans dieâ… Louis Ng, ACRESâs executive director and founder said that more than 3800 sharks were caught every 20 minutes to meet global demand for shark fin, pushing many shark species towards extinction. One of the supporters, physiotherapist Chng Chye Tuan, said that despite opposition from both sets of parents he decided against serving shark fin soup at their wedding. âYou can see the impact humans have on the ecosystem. The variety of fish is not as much as before,â said Mr Chng, referring to observations he made during diving trips.
