Tiritiri Matangi Top Restoration Site

Date: 2/6/2009

Tiritiri Matangi Island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf Marine Park (New Zealand) was named one of the top 25 ecological restoration projects in Australia and New Zealand. The Department of Conservation-managed Island is one of five DOC restoration projects selected by a panel of eminent ecologists in a competition run by the international Global Restoration Network. The 220-hectare island was stripped of 94% of its native bush during 120 years of farming. Between 1984 and 1994 volunteers planted 300,000 trees. The island is now 60% forested, the remainder will be left as grassland for species such as the takahe. Visit
