A deep sea submarine exploring the Tasman Fracture Zone off Australia’s southern coast, a vertical drop in the earth’s crust from two to four kilometres, discovered new species of animals. The joint venture between US and Australian researchers set out to go deeper than previous voyages and look for any life present. Numerous animals, sea spiders and ancient coral were discovered. Jason the submarine used to take the expedition down belongs to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the US. It is the size of a small car and can dive to six kilometres.
