A salvage operation will attempt to recover £70 million (NZ $152 million) of silver 300 miles off the coast of Galway, Ireland. The UK government awarded Odyssey Marine Exploration (USA) the exclusive salvage contract for the cargo of SS Gairsoppa, a British cargo steamer enlisted in the service of the UK for the ministry of war transport during World War II. It was torpedoed and sunk on 17 February 1941. Of the 32 crew members, only one survived. The wreck now lies at 2,000 metres.
