Increases in Shell Production

Date: 4/6/2010

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution found some shell-building creatures, such as crabs, shrimp and lobsters, build more shell when exposed to ocean acidification caused by elevated levels of atmospheric CO2. It found that seven of the 18 shelled species observed built more shell when exposed to varying levels of increased acidification. Organisms displaying such improvement included calcifying red/green algae, limpets and temperate urchins. Mussels showed no effect.
