Reef Damage Could Last for Years

Date: 1/3/2011

Recent flooding of Australias major Queensland rivers is of concern for the marine environment and the Great Barrier Reef. Flood waters bring freshwater into the coastal marine environment, which can kill marine life. Other materials in the floodwaters have negative effects on the marine environment, which can last for years and impede the recovery of organisms. In some areas there will be also an issue with pollution from oil, sewage and debris.
