Diver Pleads Guilty

Date: 1/6/2011

A Wellington man who faked his disappearance on a diving trip pleaded guilty to wasting police time. Colin Smithies, 49, prompted a search when he was thought to have gone missing on a diving trip at Titahi Bay (New Zealand) but turned up days later in the Hawke’s Bay. He was sentenced to 300 hours’ community work and ordered to pay $16,292 in reparation – less than half the estimated cost of the search.
