Jellyfish Swarms Threat to Oceans

Research by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science USA suggests jellyfish are devouring huge quantities of plankton, depriving small fish of the food they need and destroying one step on the food chain. The increase in numbers is attributed to factors including climate change, over-fishing, agricultural fertilizers runoff and the elimination of predators such as sharks and tuna. The jellyfish ‘blooms’ are reported in ever-increasing size and frequency worldwide.
