No Sewage into the Ocean

Date: 1/8/2011

New Zealands Hon Dr Nick Smith, Minister for the Environment, opened a pilot plant near Rotorua to turn sewage sludge into energy, plastics and useful chemicals. The thermal oxidation pilot plant was developed as an initiative of the ‘Waste 2 Gold’ biosolids research programme into organic waste utilisation. The pilot uses thermal deconstruction to ‘cook’ the biosolids (sewage sludge) and break them down into re-useable chemicals and other by-products. These can be used for fertilisers or in the production of bioplastics and biofuels.
