Theft of 300-year-old Bell

Date: 1/8/2011

A man was charged with stealing a 300 year old ship’s bell from Otorohanga, New Zealand. A Hamilton scrap dealer’s yard paid $435 for it, then sent it to its Auckland yard for recycling. A bell enthusiast at the yard put it to one side, and the police were called. The 75kg bronze bell came from the 1694 British warship HMS Pembroke.
