Famous for his No Limits sled dive to 209m in 2005, Patrick was found dead in his family pool at his home in Brussels, Belgium. Musimu exceeded by nearly 40m the previous best. The dive was not recognised by the sport’s governing body AIDA as he dived to such depth by breaking new ground technically. Instead of equalising his middle ears and sinuses in a conventional manner, he developed a way to flood them with seawater to avoid equalisation. This allowed him to dive deeper than previously possible. Since his 209m dive; other freedivers have adopted the technique.
