RAF Bomb Detonation

Date: 1/10/2011

Divers detonating two RAF bombs off the UK coastline may have lead to the deaths of 16 whales, conservationists said. The explosives, left behind from a training exercise at RAF Tain, were detonated in the Highlands of Scotland. It is believed a pod of 60 pilot whales fled the area after the bombs went off, and became stranded in the shallow estuary at the Kyle of Durness. Volunteers tried to guide the whales back out to sea but 16 became beached and perished.
