Japan’s Whaling Fleet

Unlike previous years, harpoon ships left Shimonoseki port without ceremony or a send-off. The Sea Shepherd conservation group is again harassing the whaling fleet with its own flotilla. Japan promised to send a patrol ship with the whaling fleet to monitor possible confrontations. More Japanese coastguard officers were dispatched with the power to arrest anyone trespassing on the whaling ships. Last year, after repeated clashes, Japan called off the hunt after catching only a fifth of its quota.
