Tragic Last Dive

Known for his safe and cautious approach to free-diving. Eric De Vries, 52, got into difficulties and apparently passed out as he was coming to the surface pulling up a kingfish he speared. He was a well-known member of Wellington’s (New Zealand) small free-diving community. World-record free-diver David Mullins, who was one of those involved in a frantic effort to save Mr De Vries, said: ‘He was a lovely guy and a very experienced diver – safe and cautious – and to lose him was quite a shock.’
