Conflict of Interest

Date: 1/7/2012

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society called for the removal of Dr Giam Choo-Hoo from the UN’s Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Dr Giam was accused of being a representative of the shark fin industry but represents Asia on the CITES Animal Committee. An independent report brought to light a major conflict of interest case where Dr Giam Choo-Hoo was using his position of power to influence and lobby those within CITES against any protection of shark species. Unlike other multilateral UN treaties, CITES has no rules against such conflicts of interest.
